"CLIMATE CHANGE: STORIES FROM THE DEVELOPING WORLD."
ORDER FORM for this publication published by Double Story in South Africa and ITDG in the UK, entitled CLIMATE CHANGE: THE KYOTO PROTOCOL’S CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM: SouthSouthNorth Stories from the Developing World by Margie Orford with Stefan Raubenheimer and Barry Kantor.

Most of this book can be downloaded under the Heading "CLIMATE CHANGE: STORIES FROM THE DEVELOPING WORLD", below.

This book gives a moving, non-technical account of what inspires people in the SouthSouthNorth network to transform the dry language of an international climate change treaty into measurable improvements in people’s lives in the South that simultaneously offer the global gift of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. This work shows how the elegant creativity of science can be stitched with the delightful unpredictability of politics and human behaviour. These stories come to life through the artwork done by children who are, or will be, beneficiaries of these projects. These pictures, with the many photographs are a wonderful kaleidoscope of the South now, with an inspiring vision for the future.

SSN Capacity Building Module on Poverty Reduction_First Draft.pdf [2646k]
The SouthSouthNorth Capacity Building Module on Poverty Reduction: Approaches for achieving sustainable development and poverty reduction

While sustainable development in climate change was the core approach in SSN 1, SSN 2 takes a further and direct focus on poverty reduction, as a core theme. Presented by the SSN Capacity Building Team, this Module on Poverty Reduction reflects our currect approach to dealing with poverty reduction.

Each SSN 2 programme is discussed separately. The SSN Matrix Tool of Indicators for Appraising the Sustainable Development of Projects, from SSN 1, is applied in SSN 2 for assessing poverty reduction by placing special emphasis on a couple of social sustainability indicators. This approach of the Mitigation Programme is followed in the Adaptation Programme. The Adaptation Programme also applies the SSN Adaptation Projects Protocol for Community Based Adaptation. This SSNAPP for CBA is a way to find the hotspots where high levels of poverty and predicted increases in climate impacts coincide. The Technology Receptivity Programme examines approaches for receiving technology in poor communities, examining not only technology hardware but also the software (processes) and orgware (institutions) required. The Capacity Building Programme uses a SWOT tool for analysing a project's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as a way to determine and ensure the sustainability of projects in terms of technology, finances and social factors.

The Module gives the various tools applied by the programmes, with examples from SSN projects. It is presented by the Capacity Building Programme in this format as a movement towards an alignment of approaches within SSN and is shared for use by others who are interested in the pursuit of sustainable projects. As a work in progress this Module will be updated as work goes on.

Receiving technology in adaptation projects_DA days.pdf [86k]
"Receiving technology in adaptation projects" is a SouthSouthNorth Working Paper, prepared by Anna Taylor, Steve Thorne and Lwandle Mqadi.

Perceptions of and approaches to technological intervention need to change from those that were developed during the recent era of mitigation-focused climate change projects. While hardware has taken centre stage in activities to reduce the emissions of Greenhouse Gasses (GHGs), processes and institutions are seen as central to building capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The paper draws from case studies of adaptation-related projects undertaken internationally, focusing on the methodologies (process), artifacts (hardware) and institutions (orgware) by which adaptation projects are introduced, designed and executed. The checklist for technology transfer and specifically reception in adaptation projects, developed as the output of the research exercise, provides the key ingredients of a process by which technologies can effectively be received and endogenised when building the capacity of communities to deal with the impacts of climate change and variability.

This paper presents an estimate of the Brazilian potential for generating carbon credits from landfill biogas recovery projects through the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol within the framework of the Climate Change Convention. It summarizes the main findings in this field of a broader study conducted for the Strategic Issues Group of the Presidency of the Republic (NAE-Secom/PR, 2005).

Towards a Framework of Clean Energy Technology Receptivity_ Steve Thorne.pdf [138k]
"Towards a Framework of Clean Energy Technology Receptivity" is a discussion paper prepared by Steve Thorne, SSN Technology Receptivity Director.

Technology invention, innovation and transfer have been a constant of human evolution. Technologies have been transferred through a variety of means including from trade to theft, leaving history littered with successful and unsuccessful examples of technology transfer through a variety of means.

Facing humanity is an unprecedented threat of anthropogenic climate change, the solution to which, is to reduce the rate at which greenhouse gasses are building up in our atmosphere and deal with the impacts of climate variability and change. Such an intervention requires a change of both technology and behaviour that reduces the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of energy services. Meanwhile, the development agenda shaped by the Millennium development Goals to reduce poverty, is gaining buy-in. So the question is how will the accelerated receipt of cleaner energy technologies be successfully achieved in marginalised communities in developing countries?

The paper considers a range of drivers, case studies and projects, that are being undertaken as an early Clean Development Mechanism experiments under the banner of the international SouthSouthNorth Group. It discusses the drivers of technology transfer and starts to unpack the elements of successful ownership of the technologies.

The paper considers ownership of hardware, software (process) and orgware (institutions) required to advance the diffusion and use of Environmentally Safe Technologies (ESTs) for the provision of energy services. It presents an approach to project selection and development under SouthSouthNorth which attempts to secure successful ownership and receipt of classes of technology that provide services essential for development.
